Welcome!
STARSHIP is a weekly newsletter about how many of us will eventually have an opportunity to travel to Mars, using the rockets developed by SpaceX. What will it take to get there? How far along are we? What will it be like once we arrive? What opportunities will there be?
I write about four general topics:
SpaceX and Starship. The current status of rocket development, testing, missions, launches and so on, along with my estimates of the future schedule for human arrival on Mars, and what it’s likely to cost you to go.
Getting Ready. If you eventually decide you want to go to Mars yourself, what kinds of things should you be doing to get ready? What skills will you need? What kind of jobs might be available once you get there?
Getting There. All about the trip. This could take up to nine months each way. What should you bring? What could the inside of the ship look like? What about your daily routine? What are the risks?
Living There. After you arrive, what will your life be like on another planet? What challenges and opportunities will be available? What types of activities will be happening that you could be engaged in?
Subscribers also receive occasional special updates about newsworthy events.
One of my goals is to give you an honest, no-nonsense view of what it will be like to travel to Mars and live there. You might go temporarily, as a tourist, or maybe permanently, as a career.
The information you’ll get here is deeper and more detailed that what you’ll see in the popular science press. If you want to develop a broad understanding of space travel, and think seriously about making the trip yourself, this is the place for you.

About Me
I have a background in math, physics and space science. I’ve written software that’s traveled to Mars three times, as well as to a comet and back, and to the Moon. I’ve worked on space mission planning, space hardware development, and simulation for NASA and others. I’ve done satellite and ground station design, and I’ve been following SpaceX closely for years.
